The 2027 Credit Union Personalization Report

90 of the top 100 credit union websites treat visitors like strangers.

We visited the 100 largest credit unions the way a member would: a first visit, a return, one look at auto loans, then back to the homepage. Only 10 changed a word. The report ranks all 100, scores what each site did, and shows what the 10 did differently.

Audited September 2026. NCUA top 100 by assets, call report of June 30, 2026. Public, logged-out websites only. A site gets credit when the homepage changes because of what the visitor did, not because a carousel advanced.

What we found

The technology is common. The outcome is rare.

01

Equipped but idle

33 of the top 100 load a personalization engine or a first-party rule system. 23 of them never changed a word for a visitor who had just read about auto loans. Each one is a paid subscription, and each is one content decision away from the top tier.

02

The engine mattered more than the stack

Finalytics was live on 8 sites and delivered a behavior-driven homepage on 7. Every other engine combined was live on 25 and delivered on 3. The sites that fired did it with lighter data stacks, because the engine arrived with banking intents and a content model already in place.

03

Assets buy tools, not outcomes

The 25 largest credit unions average 18 points out of 100. Several of the sites that responded sit in the bottom half of the asset ranking, and several of the ten largest run an engine that never changed a word for our visitor.

All 10 did the same thing. They replaced the hero with the product the visitor had just researched. No login, no form, no cookie banner. One page view.

Our approach

A test anyone can repeat with a browser.

Last year's report looked for evidence of personalization and found 24 sites. This year we tested instead. For every one of the 100 largest credit unions by assets we ran the routine a shopper would run, in one browser session, and compared the homepage line by line at each step. Carousel rotation, randomized testimonials, cookie banners and menus that render late were classified as noise and every result was reviewed by hand.

How the score is built
50
Observed personalization: what the behavior test showed
20
Activation: the engine is deciding for the visitor
30
Capability: engines, CMS modules and experimentation
−10
Third-party load above the audit median
  1. First visit to the homepageEvery script, vendor host and line of visible text recorded.
  2. A return visitDoes the site treat someone it has seen before any differently?
  3. A plain reloadTells us how much the page changes on its own, so rotation does not count.
  4. One visit to the auto loan pageThe visitor shows what they are shopping for.
  5. Back to the homepageA change that appears here, and not on the reload, is a change the visitor caused.
The report

Get the full ranking, all 100.

Every credit union in the top 100 has a position on the curve, a score, a tier and a list of the tools we found on its site. The report also shows exactly what the 10 changed, which engines delivered, and a six-step plan for moving up in 2027.

  • The full ranking. All 100 credit unions scored out of 100 and placed in one of five tiers, from Personalizing to Minimal.
  • What the 10 changed. The homepage before and after the auto loan visit, site by site.
  • Which engines deliver. Every engine found on a top-100 homepage: sites where it is live against sites where the page actually changed.
  • The technology landscape. CMS, data platforms, analytics, chat, consent and product tools across the top 100.
  • A 2027 execution strategy. Six steps, starting with a ten-minute test and what you already own.
  • The scoring model. So your team can reproduce the test and track the result through the year.

Your website

See how your website scores.

If you are in the top 100, we will walk you through your ranking, what we observed on your homepage, and what it would take to move up a tier. If you are not, we will run the same test on your site and share the result. Either way it is a 30-minute conversation with the people who ran the audit, and it works for community banks too.

Or run the ten-minute test yourself
  1. Open your site in a private browser window and read the homepage hero.
  2. Visit the auto loan page, then return to the homepage.
  3. Repeat for home loans and checking.
  4. Reload the homepage twice with no other visits.
  5. Write down what changed after the product visits and what changed on the reloads.

If only the reloads changed anything, the site is rotating, not recognizing.

Request your score

Tell us where to look and who to send it to. We will come back with your position on the curve and a time to walk through it.

Everything we score comes from behavior on the public site. Never a name or an account number.
